Caring for Your Bonsai
Your bonsai tree or plant will last you for a lifetime if cared for correctly. They are a work in progress; a development of the harmony between nature and man.
Bonsai popularity has grown since its emergence into western society and bonsai products are now available commercially and can be found in most garden nurseries. To care for your bonsai you need some basic techniques which apply to all styles of bonsai cultivation, no matter which style you select.
The most important consideration with your bonsai is the soil. A pre mixed bonsai soil is generally best. Without a quality soil your bonsai will not grow and develop as it should.
Watering your bonsai tree is also important. When considering watering you should address the type of plant you have, the age of the plant and also the climate. The soil of the bonsai should often be kept damp - please not that this definitely depends upon the planting you have chosen to cultivate, but this does not mean that you should be constantly watering. Over watering can cause plants to rot - essentially you are drowning them.
Fertilizing your bonsai is also very important as it ensures healthy growth. Because the bonsai tree is typically pruned and created to be smaller than its regular sized relations you must take significant care when fertilizing. As with over-watering, over fertilizing may damage or even kill your bonsai. Fertilizing, or feeding, your bonsai should be done at regular intervals throughout the year taking into consideration the seasons and when the tree or plant is in a growing phase as opposed to when the plant is resting such as winter.
Three of the most important fertilizers are potassium, nitrogen and phosphorus. They assist the plant with stem and leaf growth, root development and overall health of the plant to promote good health and for the bonsai to better resist pests and diseases.
If the fertilizer is not appropriately balanced, development of one aspect of your bonsai may suffer however you can easily address this with balancing your fertilizer.
Bonsai plants and trees can grow more quickly than a plant which has been planted in a more traditional style in the garden. The bonsai receives more detailed care, it is planted in a small pot or tray and watered and fertilized with care. For this reason your bonsai plant will need regular re-potting. Generally a rule of thumb is to re-pot your bonsai at two-year intervals. This will vary with the size and species of your bonsai plant.
Another important aspect of caring for your bonsai is position and location. This will definitely depend on the style of plant or tree you have selected to cultivate. Does your tree need shade or sun? Just because the plant is in miniature does not alter its basic requirements for sun or shade, indoor or outdoor. You must also be aware that a miniature plant does not immediately eliminate the risk of disease. You should keep an eye on your bonsai and monitor it for evidence of insects or disease on your plant. If there are, you should take steps to eliminate the pest or disease.
Caring for your bonsai requires particular tools and these can be readily obtained from your local garden centre or horticulture outlet. Pruning and plucking, shaping and developing your bonsai takes care and precision - this can be best done with the proper tools.
