Bird Feeders Are Good All Year Round

Bird feeders are good all year round. Though many people think of bird feeding as just a winter activity, birds need food year round.

Birds can be divided into four groups according to what kind of food they eat. There are meat eaters who eat insects. There are birds who eat fruit and berries. There are birds who eat nuts and seeds, and there are nectar eaters. Birds may fall into one or more groups. Robins, for example, although known for eating worms and other insects, eat berries and fruits. Hummingbirds, although known for eating nectar, also eat insects.

In the autumn, birds need seeds to fatten up before they fly south for the winter. In the winter, the non-migratory birds will eat seeds from your feeder. These birds rely heavily on the nutrients fat and protein, which seeds contain.

If you have only one feeder, then putting out black oil sunflower seeds is best. They are very nutritious for birds. If you have multiple feeders, then consider putting out other commercial mixes also, including suet, or mixes and suet that you make yourself. Beware of commercial mixes that contain a variety of non-preferred seeds. Rapeseed, golden millet, and red millet are only popular with a few species and may go to waste. In addition, make sure that the seed has no more than thirteen percent moisture.

In the spring, the migratory birds return hungry. This is when nest building and egg laying take place, and the birds need extra nutrients for these activities. You might also consider putting out crushed egg shells to give the birds extra calcium. In the heat of summer, hummingbirds and orioles will eat nectar.
